Will History Repeat Itself?

This candidate was touted as the Democrats' best hope to take back the White House from a party the liberal activists despised (and assumed everyone else did, too). So they held their noses and got behind this candidate, even though there were obvious problems both ideologically and personally. Then the votes rolled in, and the activists were shocked that their anti-Republican candidate didn't win.

I'm talking about the 2004 vote of course. But I'm wondering if we'll see a similar scenario play out in 2008 with Hillary Clinton.

Beantown

The other night, after the Red Sox won the World Series, about 40 revelers were arrested for overzealous celebrating. Isn't that just a typical night in Beantown?

Qualified Answer

In an interview Chris Wallace seemingly tried to get Laura Bush to express support for Hillary Clinton as a "qualified" woman candidate. Laura expertly said she would be happy to vote for a qualified woman Republican. And perhaps her initials are LB?

How Free the Speech?

A black Pentecostal minister who says homosexuality is a sinful choice is on the program to sing at a Barack Obama campaign event in South Carolina. Gay activists are calling on the candidate, who has taken a clear stand in favor of homosexual rights, to can him. Instead, Obama has disassociated himself from the pastor's remarks while keeping him in the lineup. The activists are outraged, of course. Free speech only applies if you happen to agree with them.

Warmed-Over Prize

Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize for his global warming alarmism-and for the fact that he is a media celebrity. If this issue is Nobel-worthy, couldn't they have found someone scientifically and academically respectable ... and with a smaller carbon footprint ... to honor?

Over a Barrel

Oil has just passed $88 a barrel, and the increase is sure to be felt at the gas pump and in winter heating bills. Is there any way to install a wood-burning stove on my car?

Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize? Well, congratulations, Al. You can put it on the shelf next to the one for Yassir Arafat.

SCHIPping Away

Democratic leaders are blasting President Bush for vetoing a $35 billion bill to expand health insurance to families making 300 percent of the poverty level. In Maryland, that would include families making over $82,000 annually.

If that makes him a scrooge, let me in.

Launch This

Some conservatives are complaining because Google chose to highlight the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch in its online logo. Hey, folks: One, you have more important things to worry about, and two, this ain't exactly gonna draw people to the movement. It's time to launch this campaign.

Wrong Move

Cubs manager Lou Pinella pulled ace pitcher Carlos Zambrano after six innings on Thursday during a tie game because he was planning to pitch him again in Game 4. Unfortunately, Game 4 never came, as the Cubs were swept in three. Sorry, Lou, it was the wrong move.

Job Satisfaction

Elements to consider when evaluating whether a job is a good fit:

- Compensation: Are pay and benefits adequate for your current and future needs?

- Vocation: Does the job allow you to use your gifts and respond to the calling you believe is on your life?

- Mission: Do you believe in the value of what you are or will be doing?

- Environment: Do you or would you like going to work and spending eight or more hours a day there?

- Growth: Is there room for development and advancement?

- Company: Is the company well run and financially solvent?

- Corporate Ethic: Does the company operate ethically, and does it respect your other commitments to church and family?

Rarely will any one job allow you to answer all these questions affirmatively. But there may be a problem if most of the answers are "No."

Memo to Employers

Treat your employees with respect. Treat them as adults. Include them as early as possible in your decision-making process, especially when changes that affect them must be made. Admit your own mistakes. Be willing to take an equal hit when tough decisions must be made.

Planned Parenthood says the approval of a new abortion clinic in a Chicago suburb is a victory for families.

Small families, maybe.

Global Bellies

Researchers say the world is getting fatter. No, this has nothing to do with plate tectonics, wobbles in the earth's rotation, or the flow of magma. It has instead to do with improving living standards. Too many people are eating too much.

I wonder if there's some way to blame this on global warming?
